admirerers are mourning the passing of nelson mandela -a pact was felt arou >>> your realtime captioner is mrs. linda m. macdonald. >>> world leaders and millions of admirers are mourning the passing of nelson mandela, a man whose impact was felt around the globe including right here in the bay area. good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. a day after the death of nelson mandela, much of the world has paused to reflect on his legacy and also his accomplishments. cbs reporter tara mergener is live in washington with more. >> reporter: mandela was an international icon. today millions are mourning his passing and celebrating his remarkable life. the flag is after half-staff at the south african embassy in washington. outside his home in johannesburg, mourners are gathering to remember the man they called madiba. a memorial service will be held tuesday and the outpouring of love says something with the caliber of the man who led the country out of apartheid. >> we'll always love madiba for teaching us that it is possible to overcome hatred and anger to build a new nation. >> reporte

! ♪ toyota. let's go places. ♪ >>> your realtime captioner is mrs. linda m. macdonald. >>> it's 7:56. i'm michelle griego. a driver crashes into the back of a police cruiser in san jose then tried to run. a security guard at a nearby hotel tackled the suspect before he got away. the officer and driver were hurt and went to the hospital. glass and mangled cars are blocking the intersection of san carlos and almaden. >> tow crews are out there now. until the in downtown san jose. a lot -- this is in downtown san jose. a lot of people in the area, they are hoping to get the investigation wrapped up in the next half hour, 8:30 again in the meantime, west san carlos and almaden that intersection shut down. bay bridge metering lights are on. it's jammed up towards the end of the parking lot. so hey, this is "friday light." it's actually looking okay this morning coming into san francisco from the east bay. the nimitz also moving better than usual even though it's starting to slow a little near the oakland coliseum. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." lawrence has a check of your cool weekend w

gunshot fires and give us pinpoint location. i almost have realtime information where shots are being fired and where i'm going. >> here's how it works. when a gun is fired, the sound is picked up and recorded by multiple season cores placed in different locations. each sensor records the exact time it detected the shot. shots spotter uses those times and the distance between each sensor to determine the location of the gunfire. >> gunfire calves a very great distance. one or two miles. if you have sensors far apart then only the strongest sound that the gunfire will give to several sensors. >> tells me what happens. walk me through it. >> the first task is to look at where that shot took place. and what kind of other information he or she they can responpass long to the respondig officer. >> close by its hard to tell what is going on. but further and further away halfway through this there is some other noise that is a second person shooting. it's exact i the sort of thing you cannot find on 911. >> wow, and techno's lindsay moran joins us from the land of pleasant living. baltimore

could participate in as a college student and experience the emotion of real-time. >> you know, there's no doubt about it. i think what he said when he made the statement yesterday, that this was the first issue he became involved in because, you know, i grew up in the post-king era. he's a few years younger than me. this was the first thing that colleges, that urban areas, that rural areas want. everyone was saying free mandela and we never seen mandela. when he walked out of the jail and a movement energized by winnie he walked out of there but changed the country from rancor and hostility and said no we're going to reconcile. this became a viable winning tactic in the life of someone like barack obama that i think never left him and i would say helped to lead him towards the kind of change and hope dynamic that he helped to make central in his own political career. so i don't think it's a leap to say the impact that the spirit of mandela and that movement had on our own president. >> katty kay? >> i just want to ask rick something about the international concerns about mandela when
